Who was Orelha, and Why He Matters?

A Catalyst

Orelha was a gentle, docile, and playful community dog who lived for a decade in Praia Brava, Florianópolis, Brazil. He had no single owner; instead, the entire neighborhood embraced him in spirit. Local residents fed him, provided shelter, and shared their daily lives with him as he napped by the beach, greeted visitors, and brought warmth and connection to everyone who encountered him.

Why He Matters

In January 2026, Orelha’s life tragically came to an end due to a severe injury that required him to be euthanized. The heartbreak surrounding his death sparked outrage across Brazil and around the world. It underscored the profound vulnerability of community animals and became a catalyst for change—leading to public protests, the #JustiçaPorOrelha movement, and legislative efforts such as the proposed Lei Orelha to impose stricter penalties for animal abuse.

Orelha matters because he symbolizes both the beauty of community love and our urgent responsibility to protect defenseless lives. Orelha’s World honors his memory, celebrates the bond between animals and communities, and continues the fight for animal protection and justice. Orelha's World is sponsored by Andares Productions LLC and serves as the official website for the documentary "I Am Orelha, I Matter.""
